Across the country, temperatures are rising and heat waves are becoming more frequent. Along with this, many pregnant mothers are reporting increased tiredness, excessive sweating, body heat, swelling, reduced appetite, disturbed sleep, and concerns regarding the effect of heat on their babies.
Questions such as:
“Doctor, I feel hot all the time.”
“I do not feel like eating.”
“My feet are more swollen now.”
“Can summer affect my pregnancy?”
are becoming increasingly common.
The good news is that summer itself is not dangerous for pregnancy. However, it demands additional awareness, hydration, nourishment and rest.
Pregnancy already places extraordinary demands on the body. During summer, expecting mothers deserve even more care.
Why Pregnant Women Feel More Heat
Pregnancy naturally increases internal warmth because the body is continuously supporting the growth and development of the baby.
Several physiological changes occur:
Blood volume increases
Metabolism rises
Hormonal activity becomes more active
Nutritional demand increases
Circulation improves to support the growing baby
When these natural changes combine with high environmental temperatures, mothers may feel:
Excess body heat
Sweating
Fatigue
Restlessness
Sleep disturbances
Reduced appetite
Heaviness in the body
Many women describe this as feeling “internally heated.”
This experience is common and often manageable with proper care.
Dehydration – One of the Biggest Summer Concerns During Pregnancy
During hot weather, the body loses more fluids through sweating.
Pregnant women already require additional hydration because of increased blood circulation and fetal growth.
If hydration becomes insufficient, mothers may experience:
Dry mouth
Headache
Weakness
Dark urine
Fatigue
Dizziness
Light-headedness
Many women unknowingly wait until they feel thirsty.
This should be avoided.
Hydration should become a daily rhythm rather than a response to thirst.
Helpful options include:
Coconut Water
Buttermilk
Lemon water
Plain water
Fresh seasonal fluids
Small amounts throughout the day often work better than drinking large quantities at once.
Heat May Increase Swelling
Summer commonly worsens swelling in pregnancy.
Mothers may notice:
Puffiness in feet
Tightness in fingers
Swollen ankles
Heaviness in legs
Heat causes blood vessels to expand, increasing fluid accumulation in some women.
Helpful measures include:
✓ Elevating feet during rest
✓ Avoiding prolonged standing
✓ Gentle walking
✓ Left-side resting
✓ Maintaining hydration
However, sudden swelling accompanied by headache, visual changes, or blood pressure concerns requires medical evaluation.
Appetite Often Reduces During Summer
One of the most overlooked summer problems in pregnancy is reduced eating.
Many mothers begin replacing meals with:
Tea
Biscuits
Packaged drinks
Fruits alone
While these may feel easier, they may not provide adequate:
Protein
Iron
Minerals
Growth nutrition
Even during summer, the baby continues growing.
Meals should therefore become:
Light + Cooling + Nourishing
Instead of:
Heavy + Oily + Difficult to digest
Best Summer Foods for Pregnant Mothers
Nature gives seasonal support beautifully.
Summer-friendly foods include:
Watermelon
Cucumber
Pomegranate

Appetite support
Foods to Limit During Extreme Heat
Pregnant women may benefit from reducing excessive intake of:
Deep fried foods
Very spicy meals
Excess sugar
Packaged snacks
Reheated oils
Bakery products
Sugary beverages
The goal is not restriction.
The goal is balance.
Summer Precautions Every Pregnant Woman Should Follow
1. Avoid peak heat exposure
Try limiting outdoor activity between:
12 pm to 4 pm
Prefer walking during:
Early morning
Or after sunset.
2. Wear breathable clothing
Choose:
Cotton fabrics
Loose clothing
Light colours
Avoid excessive synthetic layers.
Comfort improves circulation and reduces overheating.
3. Eat smaller meals frequently
Instead of three very heavy meals:
Try:
Breakfast
Mid-morning nourishment
Lunch
Cooling evening snack
Light dinner
This often improves digestion and energy.
4. Prioritise rest
Heat may increase:
Fatigue
Irritability
Sleep difficulty
Rest is not laziness.
Rest is pregnancy care.
Cooling Pranayama for Summer Pregnancy Care
Along with food and hydration, gentle breathing practices may help mothers feel calmer and more comfortable.
These should always be practised gently and without force.
